Prof. Hadi Susilo ARIFIN has had a distinguished academic career for more than three-decades at Bogor Agricultural University (1985-present), where he isa full Professor of Landscape Management since July, 2005 in the Laboratory of Landscape Architecture, Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University. From 1999 to 2005 and 2006-2009 he was appointed as Chair of the Landscape Architecture Study Program, Master Degree Program of the Graduate School of Bogor Agricultural University. Since 2000, he has held “Studio Pro”, a student entrepreneurship unit, which covers landscape planning, landscape design, landscape construction, landscape maintenance, landscape plants rental and interior landscape services. He has served concurrently in the posts of Chairman of Landscape Architecture Department, Head of Landscape Management Laboratory, Secretary of C-Commission of Agriculture Faculty Senator, and Secretary of A-Commission of IPB Professor Board since 2005. In 2008, he was elected a member of the IPB Academic Senate. In professional organizations, he acted as chairman of the Japan Alumni Organization, Bogor branch (2001-2004) and Chairman of the Indonesia Association of Landscape Architecture Education (FPALI, 2003-2006, 2006-2009, 2009-2012). He has been active in the South East Asia Network for Agroforestry Education (SEANAFE) and the Indonesia Network for Agroforestry Education (INAFE) since 2000. Since November 2010 as the Indonesian representative he has been a senior researcher board member of the SEANAFE in Los Banos, the Philippines. He has been a consultant on agriculture biodiversity of PEKARANGAN landscape for food security in Badan Ketahanan Pangan (BKP/Food Security Agency) – Ministry of Agriculture, Republic of Indonesia since February 2010. Since early September 2010 he has been a member of Kelompok Kerja Ahli – Dewan Ketahanan Pangan Nasional (Task Force Expert of the National Food Security Council). He also was a technical supervisor of agro-biodiversity and landscape ecology in Yayasan KEHATI (Biodiversity Foundation- Indonesia) since March, 2010. From April to June 2006 he was a visiting professor in the Awaji Landscape Planning and Horticulture Academy (ALPHA), Hyogo Prefecture, Japan and from October 2010 to January 2011 he was a visiting scholar in the Department of Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resources Studies (CARRS), College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, the US. He was a visiting professor in the Graduate School of International Development and Cooperation (IDEC) Hiroshima University, Japan from April until July 2012.
As lecturer, Prof. Hadi serves some courses on the subject of Landscape Ecology (Ekologi Lanskap), Rural & Agricultural Landscape (Lanskap Pertanian dan Perdesaan), and Sustainable Landscape Management (Pengelolaan Lanskap Berkelanjutan) for Graduate School; Fundamental Landscape Architecture (Dasar-dasar Arsitektur Lanskap), Agricultural Landscape, Introduction to Landscape Ecology, and Landscape Management (Pengelolaan Lanskap) for Undergraduate Program, and Introduction of Agriculture Science (Pengantar pada Ilmu-ilmu Pertanian) for General Class of TPB-IPB. He was as visiting professor in Awaji Landscape Planning and Horticulture Academy, Hyogo, Japan (Tropical Landscape Management Course); he has been delivering the course subject of Development Science I in IDEC Hiroshima University, Japan.
As a researcher, he was a visiting scientist in Tokyo University, Okayama University and Tohoku University between 1998 -2008, and in IDEC Hiroshima University 2008, 2010, and as a visiting professor in 2012. He has been an overseas collaborator at “Global Environmental Leader Education Program for Designing a Low Carbon Society” – International Development and Cooperation (IDEC), Hiroshima University since October 21, 2008 to 2013. His track as a researcher was started after he got Ph.D., in 1998 he was asked to join in the Core University Research Program on Applied Bio-Science between JSPS/DGHE, the University of Tokyo/IPB. He was pointed as a research group leader on Landscape Ecological Study on Sustainable Bio-resources Management in Rural Indonesia in 2000-2003, 2004-2008. Some research grants were received, i.e. Hibah Penelitian Tim Pasca Sarjana (Research Grant of Graduate School Team) from Directorate General of Higher Education (DGHE) in the topic of Watershed Based on Harmonization of Agriculture Development on Rural & Urban Landscape in Bogor Puncak Cianjur (BOPUNJUR) Region in 2006 – 2008, research grant from Rural Development Institute (RDI) Seattle, USA in the topic of Homestead Garden Survey on Java in 2006 -2008, ICRAF research grant for Agroforestry Landscape Analysis in 2007 -2009 (field research, in country training, and main streaming for lecture note writing), Hibah Kompetensi (Competency Grant) from DGHE in the topic of Rural Landscape Management for Welfare and Sustainable Environment in 2008 -2010, and Hibah Kompetitif Penelitian sesuai Unggulan Nasional (National Priority of Research Competitive Grant) from DGHE in the topic of Cultural and Local Wisdom Based for Revitalization of Bio-resources Structure and Pekarangan Function toward Food Security in Rural Community in 2009. In 2010 – 2011 he is involved to project entitled “Assessing the State of Agroforestry Research and Development in Indonesia” under funding support from SEANAFE, Inc., Los Banos, the Philippines. Between 2011 and 2015 he is a research member on the research topic of JABODETABEK Mega-Cities (research collaboration between Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) and Research Institute of Humanity & Nature (RIHN), Kyoto Japan. He is a research coordinator of Landscape Ecology of Ciliwung River (join research between Faculty of Agriculture/IPB and National Unievrsity of Singapore (NUS)/ETH Zurich during 2012-2015. He is also a research group member of Estimation of Terrestrial Carbon Balance in the Papua Island for REED+ Preparedness that gratnted by GELs IDEC (2012-2013). Started in 2015 he joined in Infrastructure Research Cluster of the Australia Indonesia Centre (AIC), and since February 2016 he has been a Cluster Leads in Urban Water Research Cluster of AIC.
OUTREACH AND EXTENSION FOCUS
Numerous community services were conducted since last a decade such as consultation services for local government project of nursery management and agro-tourism (Batam Authority, 2000-2002), bio-remediation and after mining landscaping (UNOCAL 76, 2002), trees assessment and green mapping (Bogor City, 2003), CSR on pekarangan and domestic garbage management (PT Erhalogy, 2007 -2008), Chairman of Jury Board of Kotaku Hijau National Competition (CSR Sampoerna Hijau, 2007/2008, 2009), Chairman of Jury Board of Batam Botanical Garden Design Competition (Ministry of Public Work of Indonesia, 2008), Chairman of Jury Board of Taman Bunga Nusantara Design Competition (Taman Bunga Nusantara Foundation, 2008/2009), and designing of Tlogo agrotourism (Central Java Province, 2009-2010). Some technical assistance on book/lecture note writing were held in Hasannudin University (2006, 2007), University of Islam Makassar (2007), Riau University (IM-HERE, 2009). Since 2009 he is pointed as a PIC on Eco-city collaboration between IPB and Sentul City. Hadi is a senior instructor of Master of Training (Subject: Revitalization of “Pekarangan” for Food Security in Indonesia Rural Communities) in Badan Ketahanan Pangan (Food Security Agency) – Ministry of Agriculture, Republic of Indonesia (2010). Then, since June 2010 he is a member of “Tim Pemberdayaan Perbaikan Ekonomi dan Gizi Keluarga” (Team of the Empowerment of Economic Improvement and Family Nutrition), SK No. 16/Kpts/OT.140/K/2010.
