“Exploring the Social Outcomes of the Cidanau Payments for Ecosystem Services Scheme”  by Francesca Louise McGrath,PhD -Department of Biological Sciences,

National University of Singapore)

Abstract:

Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes have become an attractive and widely used instrument for environmental conservation. Ensuring that PES schemes are equitable, fair and just for all involved is of growing interest in the PES literature and to practitioners. In this talk I will explore a longstanding PES scheme in Cidanau Indonesia. In the first half of my presentation I will discuss the differences in social capital between participants and non-participants. I find that both PES participants and non-participants have high levels of social capital, despite perceived tensions and jealousy caused by the scheme. The second half of my presentation will discuss the differences between identifying participants using social and spatial targeting focusing on the outcomes of social equity, participant perceptions, understanding and compliance. The results indicate that both the social and spatial targeting of participants is equitable, and all participants are complying. It is hoped that this presentation will be of interest to academics and practitioners alike to help improve PES scheme implementation and reduce negative social impacts to ultimately improve their success.

“Designing Payment for Ecosystem Services for an Urban Water Supply Watershed: a case of Rejoso Kita, Indonesia (B.. Leimona*, F. S. Negoro**, B. Lusiana, N. Khasanah, L. Tanika, N. Khususiyah, S. Amaruzaman)

by Ni’matul Khasanah (Senior Researcher, Agroforestry Modeller – ICRAF)

Abstract:

Agriculturally dominated land cover in upper and midstream of urban source watershed becomes key determinants for safeguarding good provisions of ecosystem services and water-related disasters. Payment for ecosystem services (PES) is an incentive-based scheme as a part of environmental governance tools that enables halting the watershed degradation by creating interrelationships between land managers of source watersheds and the urban users who depend on them.

The Rejoso Kita initiative is piloting the PES schemes targeting productive landscapes and smallholders in rural developing country context. Conceptually, the pilot is applying landscape approach to ensure comprehensive but contextual targets and solutions. Further, it tests a reverse auction as a tool to determine the level of incentives for smallholders to join the conservation contacts in their farming lands. This innovation will contribute to more efficient and inclusive watershed management plan and budgeting in developing countries, where information on ecosystem services incentive-systems and rural social systems are mostly nonexistence.
