Tue 20 May 2014
Baubau is located in Buton Island, South East Sulawesi Province. It’s one of the ten KOTA PUSAKA, which is categorized into Class A. Due to I have a research of Landscape Management aspect for Baubau Heritage City with Master Student, Ray March Syahadat and my colleague, Dr Nurhayati HS Arifin, who is expert in Historical and Cultural Landscape, there fore, we got a site visit from May 15 up to May 18, 2014.
During site visit, we had a meeting with local government of Baubau City, Bappeda, SKPD represebtatives, NGO’s etc. on Friday morning of May 16, 2014 in Balaikota Baubau, whic is lied in the front of Betoambari Beach.
I was lucky, I had got an opportunity to have Friday praying in MASJID Kerato Buton “MASIGI OGENA” (the great mosque), then I visited “Benteng Keraton” or Keraton Wolio Fort, which has 12 “LAWA” or gate. Friday afternoon I visited “Istana Kamali Baadia” or Kamali Baadia Palace, that has been functioned as Wolio Cultural Museum now. I spent time of the remain evening of Friday to visit Quba Mosque, Ray’s Grand Father Palace, and “Benteng Baadia” or Baadia Fort. In the evening we got a chance to eat a KASOAMI, a traditional staple food that’s made from “singkong” or cassava and very fresh grilled fish in the downtown of Baubau City.
In the morning of third day I got interpretation to Kamali Baturo Palace, Colonial and China Town Zones, Malige Palace, The 1st Sorawolio Fort and the 2nd Sorawolio Fort. All of the heritages are very interesting object to become tourist destination in Baubau. Due to there are many Ferry and Pelni Ship get a transit a few hours in Baubau harbor, I guessed it would be great if the local government provide city tour for transit tourists.
In the afternoon I visited some ethnics who are living in Baubau city such as Wabarobo and Labalawa. Even though they are living in the same village, but they own different language. Unbelievable…… It’s linguafranca, between ethnics they communicate one and each other by Wolio language. I got rest for lunch in LAKEBA Restaurant, very big and very nice restaurant which has delicious seafood menu. I really enjoyed eating the sea food while got a relaxation in a gazebo, close to the white sandy beach of Betoambari.
In the afternoon, I reached “Kampung Tenun Buton”, SULAA is Buton waving village. Then to see the Dragon Tail, which is located in PALAGIMATA water front landscape, Balaikota area. “Palagi Mata” area is waterfront landscape in Balaikota Baubau. FYI, the Dragon Head is lied in Kamali Beach.
The next visit were Kaisabu ethnic, and Ciacia ethnic. Ciacia ethnic occupied three villages of Bugi, Gonda and Karyabaru. The interesting one is they are using both Latin letter and Korean character for daily live. I found both of characters in the signboard of schools, offices, street name, etc. This ethnic has similarity pronunciation between Ciacia and Korean languages. Next village was Waliabuku. This area are settled by Bugis ethnic. In the evening we got Engkari-engkari village, which is transmigration area that’s occupied by Balinese people since 1978. We saw a big Pura Desa and large paddy field in this village and it’s vicinity.
When the evening, I reached Wantiro beach. While enjoying the sunset panoramic landscape I got “pisang and ubi goreng with sambal” and “saraba” drink.
The last day, on Sunday morning I visit the green city project, also as a water front city of KOTA MARA in Baubau. On the way to Betoambari Airport I got opportunities to visit traditional gold and silver craft center, only the one remained inside of Keraton Fort area. Also I visited the remained traditional brass metal & bronze craft center, and traditional pottery village. These are the tangible Cultural Heritage in Baubau City….. (HSA)
